Effects of cis-β-ocimene, cis-sabinene hydrate, and monoterpene and sesquiterpene mixtures on alfalfa pellet intake by lambs

چکیده
The transition of grasslands to shrubdominated scrubland reduces livestock productivity and contributes to impoverished conditions for humans in arid and semiarid regions worldwide. Many shrubs that are increasing in dominance contain secondary compounds that deter browsing by herbivores. Knowledge concerning the effects of specific compounds in herbivore diets is limited but may provide useful insights into desertification. Flourensia cernua is a dominant shrub in the northern Chihuahuan Desert that contains an abundance of terpenes. Four experiments were conducted to determine the effects of terpenes on intake of alfalfa pellets by lambs. Two individual monoterpenes (cis-β-ocimene and cis-sabinene hydrate) were examined in Exp. 1 and 2, and mixtures of monoterpenes (borneol, camphene, camphor, 1,8-cineole, limonene, myrcene, and α-pinene) and sesquiterpenes (βcaryophyllene, caryophyllene oxide, α-copaene, and αhumulene) were examined in Exp. 3 and 4, respectively. Forty-five lambs (9 lambs/treatment) were individually fed treated alfalfa pellets for 20 min each morning for 5 d. Five treatments (0×, 0.5×, 1×, 2×, and 10×; multiples

متن کاملEffect of individual terpenes on consumption of alfalfa pellets by sheep.
We examined effects of individual terpenes on alfalfa pellet intake of lambs in five experiments. Forty-five lambs (nine lambs/treatment) were individually fed alfalfa pellets sprayed with either p-cymene, alpha-humulene, 1,8-cineole, 3-carene, or sabinene at one of five concentrations (one terpene per experiment). Treatments (0, .5, 1, 2, and 10x) were multiples of the concentration (x) of a s...
متن کاملComposition And Antimicrobial Activity Of The Essential Oil Of Heracleum Lanatum Michx. From Uttarakhand Himalaya
The essential oil from the flowering aerial parts of Heracleum lanatum Michx. family Apiaceae was obtained by hydrodistillation and analysed by combination of GC (RI) and GC-MS. The chemical composition of the isolated oil is reported for the first time. Sixty five compounds were identified representing 96.95% of the total oil. The chemical composition of the isolated oil was characterised by a...
متن کاملComparison of Essential oil of Ocimum sanctum L. from Fresh and Dry Aerial Parts by Hydro-distillation and Steam Distillation
The use of natural products as medicinal agents presumably predates the earliest recorded history. Ocimum sanctum L., is a plant which is used in several traditional medicine systems to cure various diseases. In this study aerial parts of Ocimum sanctum were collected on august 2014 from Shahr-e-Rey in Iran. Fresh and dry partsof plants essential oils were extracted with hydro-distillation and ...
متن کاملComparison Extraction Methods of Essential oils of Rosmarinus officinalis L. in Iran By Microwave Assisted Water Distillation; Water Distillation and Steam Distillation
Rosmarinus officinalis L. is a perennial herb that belongs to the Lamiaceae family. It is used as a food flavouring agent, and well known medicinally for its powerful antimutagenic, antibacterial and chemopreventive properties. The most applicable method for extraction of essential oil is water distillation (WD) and steam distillation (SD). It is a traditional technique which is used in most in...
